Transrectal ultrasonographic diagnosis of jejunoileal intussusception in a cow

چکیده
422 peer reviewed Intussusception is defined as the invagination of a portion of bowel into the lumen of the adjacent segment of bowel (Smith, 1985). Intussusception, one of the causes of intestinal obstruction, is not a common gastrointestinal condition in cattle (Pearson and Pinsent, 1977; Smith, 1985; Smith, 1990) and is usually seen in calves less than two months old (Constable et al., 1997). The cause of an intussusception is often unknown but any condition that alters intestinal motility has been implicated (Aytug, 1991; Constable et al., 1997). It is suggested that intussusception can represent a diagnostic challenge in cattle medicine. History, clinical and clinicopathologic examinations are important in the diagnosis of intussusception (Constable, et. al, 1997; Smith, 1984). Although ultrasonography has been commonly used as a diagnostic tool to detect internal diseases of large animals, there is limited ultrasonographic data demonstrating intussusceptions in cattle (Braun et al., 1995; Edens et al., 1996; Braun, 2003). This case report describes a small intestinal intussusception in a cow and the transrectal ultrasonographic view of the lesion.

متن کاملUsefulness and Limitation of Ultrasonography in the Diagnosis of Intestinal Intussusception in Cows
The present study was conducted on 6 chronically ill Jersey/Red Sindhi cross-bred cows, which were suspected for intestinal obstruction on the basis of history and clinical signs. These cows were ultimately diagnosed with intestinal intussusception based on a combination of clinical, ultrasonographic and surgical examinations. "Bull's eye lesion" was the most prominent ultrasonographic finding,...
متن کاملUltrasonographic diagnosis of adult intussusception caused by pedunculated colon carcinoma.
Adult intussusception is clinically rare. We report a case with colon intussusception caused by a pedunculated polyp of the sigmoid colon in a 54-year-old male. Abdominal ultrasonographic screening for hematochezia showed intussusception in the sigmoid colon, demonstrating a multiple concentric ring sign and a mobile leading colon polyp. Histological examination of a biopsy specimen of the poly...
متن کاملTotal Jejunoileal Intussusception: A Case Report and Literature review
Small bowel intussusceptions are much less common than the ileocolic type, with jejunoileal intussusceptions being amongst the most rare1. We review the literature on small bowel intussuception, using a case of an 11-year-old girl with a jejunoileal intussusception involving the whole of the small bowel, from the level of the duodenojejunal flexure to the ileocaecal valve, as an illustrative hi...

BACKGROUND Adult intussusception is a rare but challenging condition. Preoperative diagnosis is frequently missed or delayed because of nonspecific or sub-acute symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION We present the case of a sixty-two year old gentleman who initially presented with pseudo-obstruction. Computerised tomography displayed a jejuno-jejunal intussusception, which was treated by primary laparo...
